The Land in Between the Lakes area is rife with scenic back roads and byways full of rolling hills, open grasslands, and lush wooded forests. Perfect for a leisurely day of exploration by car. So hit the road and discover the beautiful scenery with these scenic drives in Land Between the Lakes.

Woodlands Trace

The Woodlands Trace is one of the most popular scenic drives in Land Between the Lakes. This easy 43-mile drive takes you through the colorful rolling terrain starting in Grand Rivers, Kentucky and continuing to Dover, Tennessee.

As you travel the 1.5-hour stretch, you’ll notice plenty of picture-worthy places to pull off and enjoy the green summer canopy, the vibrant fall foliage, or even the sparse, still winter views. Catering to the nature lover, Woodlands Trace is the perfect place to enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, camping and picnic areas, ATVs, horseback riding, and more.

Kentucky Lake Drive

Located along the famous Woodlands Trace byway is Kentucky Lake Drive. Veer off the main road onto a one-way country drive that runs along Kentucky Lake. The short 3-mile route offers scenic picnic areas overlooking the lake, hiking and biking trails to explore the wooded forest nearby, and popular spots for bird watching.

Elk & Bison Prairie

Located in a 700-acre restored native habitat off Woodlands Trace, this weaving three-mile loop features an impressive, diverse wildlife population. The considerable number of elk and bison that call this area home are responsible for the prairie’s namesake and have made it a year-round attraction.

When visiting during the cooler months, motorists see plenty of these majestic animals out on the grassy plains. In the warmer spring months, watch the migratory and native birds munch on returning plant blooms. During late summer, catch the explosion of butterfly population as migratory species make their way through the grassy fields and wooded forests.

FS Rd #127

Head out to this picturesque drive full of lush forests and grassy open spaces. A beautiful route to take with changing landscape, several species of resident birds, and impressive sunrises/sunsets. Bring your binoculars to see the herons perched on the adjacent islands!

St. Stephen’s Church

Travel a windy one-lane gravel road up and down the hilly terrain of FS Rd #415 to the abandoned St. Stephen’s church, one of the Land Between Lakes few remaining original buildings. The challenging two-mile drive is worth the slow roll to the recently restored historical landmark.

Tips for a Scenic Drive in Land Between the Lakes

Plan a safe and exciting day trip through Land Between the Lakes.

  • Be sure to keep a copy of the Motor Vehicle Use Map in an easily accessible spot to make sure you stay on the route because GPS is not always available in remote areas. The MVUM lists the little-known Forest Service (FS) Road numbers, trails, designated picnic and camping sites, and motor vehicle-approved areas.
  • Make sure your vehicle is equipped to handle the terrain of the route you plan on using. Popular trails are more developed and more manageable for cars to take; however, some lesser traveled or remote areas should only be accessed by off-road vehicles, Jeeps, and vehicles with four-wheel drive.
  • Bring a picnic basket of goodies to enjoy at one of the many scenic pull-offs. Even if a picnic isn’t on your itinerary, be sure to pack water and nutrient-dense snacks for emergencies.
  • Be aware of the environment and your potential impact. Traveling through the diverse ecosystem of the Land Between the Lakes, visitors may come into contact with many easily disturbed wildlife refuges. It’s best to observe from afar to minimize environmental damage and disturbances.
