Cool off this summer with a visit to the Land Between the Lakes! One of the best ways to explore the area’s scenic landscape and wildlife is by kayaking or canoeing its many water trails. Discover these places to canoe or kayak at Land Between the Lakes.
There are designated trails, all with easy access points for kayaks and canoes to enter the water. Below is a brief description of each trail:
Ginger Bay
Nestled between secluded bays and bluffs along Kentucky Lake and the Tennessee River, Ginger Bay is a water trail that creates a peaceful escape for those who want to explore the region’s natural wonders. The rocky shorelines are filled with fossils including brachiopods and ancient clams. Wildlife viewing is also good along this trail, such as bald eagles that can be viewed year-round.
Fulton Bay
Fulton Bay is located on Lake Barkley and the Cumberland River and is full of beautiful inlets perfect for canoes and kayaks. The trail is designated as a wildlife refuge from November through March 15, which means the opportunities to view wildlife the remainder of the year are excellent. Plus, the lush shorelines offer the avid bird watchers a chance to see green herons, tanagers, prothonotary warblers, eastern kingbirds and northern parulas.
Honker Lake
Honker Lake is perfect for wildlife lovers! The 180-acre lake located along the lake, near Lake Barkley, is where eagles, osprey, cormorants, beavers, deer and a variety of birds are found. This water trail provides fishermen with crappie fishing holes in the spring and stunning sunsets in the evening. Enjoy the trail’s calm and shallow waters and extend your trip to Hematite Lake for more waters to explore.
Taylor Bay
Found off the main channel of Lake Barkley, the Taylor Bay Water Trail provides paddlers with a tour of primitive forests and scenic waterways. Nestled within Land Between the Lake’s Woodlands Nature Watch Area, Taylor Bay is a great place to stop and view the wildlife. Paddlers will find everything from natural wonders to historic structures in one of the Land Between the Lakes most scenic bays.
