The Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area manages over 170,000 acres of land between Kentucky and Barkley lakes in Western Kentucky and Tennessee. The protected undeveloped forest features diverse wetlands with 300 miles of shoreline and forested areas, an ideal natural habitat for wildlife viewing. So, grab your binoculars and camera for wildlife viewing at Land Between the Lakes.
Bald Eagles
Kentucky Lake has become one of the country’s premier places to see Bald Eagles. With miles and miles of undeveloped shoreline, bare trees, and ample food supply, bald eagles flock to Kentucky Lake every winter to nest and catch fish. There are an estimated 100 Bald Eagles that make Kentucky Lake their home every January and February, so bring your binoculars and keep your eye out for the chance to see one.
Duncan Lake is another great spot for viewing bald eagles. The lake is a wildlife refuge and is home to an abundance of waterfowl and eagles. The refuge is closed during the winter months to protect the birds, but you can reserve a spot on an eagle van tour. Call 270-924-2020 to reserve.
Elk and Bison Prairie
One of the best chances for wildlife viewing at Land Between the Lakes is at the Elk and Bison Prairie. Spanning 700 acres, the prairie is home to bison and elk that roam freely while visitors can observe from their cars. The 3.5-mile paved road winds through the enclosed space and offers several interpretive exhibit areas along the way.
While any time of year is great to visit, summer and fall are particularly nice because this is when the elk and bison calves are born. In the fall, elk commence with the annual rut which is distinguished by the bugling sound the male elk makes when mating.
Remember to always maintain a safe distance and stay inside your car when large animals are within 200 feet of your car.
Honker Lake
Honker Lake is a great spot for wildlife viewing at Land Between the Lakes. Walk the 4.5-mile trail that circles the lake where you have the opportunity to see beavers, deer, osprey, otters, and more.
