Where to View Wildlife at Land Between the Lakes

The Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area spans over 170,000 acres of land between Kentucky and Barkley lakes in Western Kentucky and Tennessee. The protected undeveloped forest features diverse wetlands with 300 miles of shoreline and forested areas, an ideal natural habitat for wildlife viewing. So, grab your binoculars and camera and discover where to view wildlife at Land Between the Lakes.

Elk and Bison Prairie

One of the best places for wildlife viewing at Land Between the Lakes is at the Elk and Bison Prairie. Spanning 700 acres, the prairie is home to bison and elk that roam freely while visitors can observe from their cars. The 3.5-mile paved road winds through the enclosed space and offers several interpretive exhibit areas along the way.

While any time of year is great to visit, summer and fall are particularly nice because this is when the elk and bison calves are born. In the fall, elk commence with the annual rut which is distinguished by the bugling sound the male elk makes, when mating.

Woodlands Nature Watch Area

Explore over 6,000 acres at the Woodlands Nature Watch Area. The wildlife refuge is home to birds of prey, songbirds wading birds, waterfowl, beavers, and more. The Woodlands Nature Station is found between Honker and Hematite Lakes. It is open year-round and the best times to visit are at dawn and dusk.

Long Creek Wildlife Refuge

A great spot for birders, the Long Creek Wildlife Refuge is a grassy wetland with several managed pools, attracting a variety of songbirds, wading birds, raptors, eagles, and waterfowl. The best times to visit are during spring and fall migrations.

Energy Lake

Energy Lake spans 300 acres with Crooked Creek dumping into its waters. Here visitors are most likely to see bald eagles, osprey, beavers, summer songbirds, and more. It is also known for its great fishing and paddling. Winter is a great time for birding in the area. Also, be sure to catch the sunset here and stay for a night of stargazing.
